Assault/Stabbing downtown

On July 8th at approximately 3:00 p.m. officers responded to a disturbance near the corner of 7th Avenue and Pike Street.  Preliminary investigation indicates that the 30-year-old male suspect was in front of the convention center acting erratically and screaming at passersby.  The 44-year-old male victim exited the convention center and saw the suspect in an altercation of some type with an elderly man.  The victim tried to walk around that altercation and for some reason was targeted by the suspect.  The suspect approached the victim and began screaming at him.  The suspect then grabbed the victim in a choke-hold and began to strangle him. The victim believed he was losing consciousness.  An unknown citizen then struck the suspect several times on the head to try to get him off of the victim.

The victim was released briefly, but the suspect grabbed him again in a choke hold and began to strangle him.  The victim then pulled a folding knife from his pocket and with the suspect’s arm wrapped around his neck, stabbed upwards into the suspect’s torso.  The suspect then released the victim.  The victim ran westbound and flagged down Mounted Patrol officers at 5th Avenue and Pike Street.

Investigating officers transported the victim to the precinct where he was interviewed and subsequently released.  The suspect was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers will be requesting charges of assault against the suspect.
