Man Shot Downtown in Armed Robbery

A man was shot downtown tonight during an armed robbery. About half past midnight on Sunday morning officers responded to reports of shots fired and a man down. Officers subsequently located a 26-year-old male (victim #1) in the 1000 block of Westlake Avenue North who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and injury to his torso, legs and hand.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting occurred at 8th Avenue North and North Aloha Street. Victim #1 was sitting in a car with his 24-year-old male friend (victim #2) drinking and smoking marijuana. An armed male suspect approached the two victims as they sat in the car and demanded their property. Victim #1 grabbed the barrel of the suspect’s gun at which time the suspect fired. Victim #1 then exited the car and advanced towards the suspect. The suspect fired several more times, striking victim #1 in the lower torso. Victim #1 fell to the ground and called for help. While this was occurring victim #2 ran off eastbound. He eventually came back and found his friend lying in the street.

SFD medics responded to the scene and transported victim #1 to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Victim #2 was not injured.

The suspect fled the scene running northbound on Westlake Avenue North and remains at large. An area search for the suspect turned up negative. The suspect is described as a black male in his mid 20’s wearing a yellow shirt and armed with a handgun.

Although both victims were less than cooperative, investigating officers were able to determine that victim #1 had cash and his cell phone taken in the robbery.

Robbery and Gang Unit detectives responded to the scene. Robbery detectives will be handling the active and on-going investigation.
