Sound Transit Light Rail/Pedestrian Collision

A man sustained life-threatening injuries after being struck by a southbound Light Rail train this evening in South Seattle.

At approximately 5:03 p.m. officers responded to 911 calls of a train/pedestrian collision at Martin Luther King Jr. Way South (MLK) and South Henderson Street.  Preliminary investigation indicates that a Sound Transit Light Rail train was southbound on MLK.  At or near the intersection with South Henderson Street a male pedestrian was crossing MLK eastbound and was struck by the train.

Fire department medics responded to the scene and transported the pedestrian, a man believed to be in his 50’s, to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives responded to the scene and continue to actively investigate the circumstances leading up to the collision.

All lanes of northbound MLK are open to vehicular and pedestrian traffic however, southbound vehicular traffic on MLK is restricted to one lane of travel.

One set of Sound Transit Light Rail Vehicle lines remain open to northbound and southbound trains along MLK.

The traffic restrictions will be in effect while detectives complete their on-scene investigation, estimated to be until at least 9:00 p.m.
