Shots Fired Across MLK, Woman Shot in the Leg

*This information is preliminary and subject to change*

Officers have one suspect in custody and continue to look for others in what appears to be an exchange of gunfire across MLK.

On May 19th at approximately 11:53 p.m. officers responded to 911 calls of multiple shots fired in the 2800 block of South Norman Street.  A witness saw two suspects hiding in a driveway shooting eastbound across MLK Jr. Way South.  Both suspects then fled westbound on foot.  Additional calls of shots fired then came in to police dispatch.

Responding officers located an adult female victim with a gunshot wound to the leg.  Officers found her hiding in a construction site south of MLK Jr. Way South and South Charles Street.  She was uncooperative with investigating officers about the events that led up to her getting shot.

Fire department medics responded to the victim’s location and transported her to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers located an adult male suspect (one of the suspects from the driveway on S. Norman St.) near 26th Avenue South and South Dearborn Street.  He was taken into custody without further incident.

Canine officers backtracked the route used by that suspect and located a handgun that is believed to be the one used by the suspect.  The gun will be submitted into evidence for further forensic analysis.  The second suspect that was with this suspect (shooting from the driveway) remains at large.  A description for suspect #2 is unavailable at this time.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the two suspects were possibly shooting at another group of suspects that were located on the east side of MLK Jr. Way South.  All of the suspects from the other group (on the east side of MLK Jr. Way South) remain at large.  There is no suspect descriptions available for them at this time.

This remains an active and on-going investigation.
