Man Drives Off Overpass Onto I-5

A reckless driver in North Seattle smashed through a guardrail and careened off an overpass onto the southbound lanes of I-5 late last night.

On March 8th at approximately 11:53 p.m. Seattle Police officers and Washington state troopers responded to I-5 southbound in North Seattle to investigate a rollover collision.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a man driving a 2008 silver Mazda 4-door sedan at excessive speed failed to negotiate a turn and left the roadway at the southwest corner of NE 80th Street and 2nd Avenue NE. The suspect drove over the curb, smashed and displaced a guardrail and went over the fence onto I-5. The vehicle landed in the southbound lanes of I-5, where it collided with a second vehicle and came to rest on its roof. Both involved vehicles were damaged to the point of needing to be towed from the scene.

The driver of the Mazda was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.

Upon further investigation the driver of the Mazda was cited for Reckless Driving.
