Officers Arrest Man For Downtown Hate Crime

Police arrested a 57-year-old man Thursday evening for physically assaulting another man while uttering racial slurs.

Officers Brian Hewitt and Travis Hill were called to a shelter in the 500 block of 3rd Avenue around 10 p.m. to respond to a report that two men were fighting on the sidewalk.

Police arrived and spoke with an adult male victim, who said the adult male suspect had attacked him, throwing punches and slamming him against a bus. The victim, who is black, told officers that the suspect, who is white, had used racial slurs during the assault. The victim told police he believed he had been targeted because of his race.

Officers Hewitt and Hill interviewed nearby witnesses and then arrested the suspect, booking him in to King County Jail on investigation of Malicious Harassment.
