The Seattle Police Department completed the transparency hat-trick this week, after SPD’s resident “hacker,” Tim Clemans, became the third member of the department to receive an award from the Washington Coalition for Open Government in as many years.
The WACOG presented Clemans with its Key Award Friday morning for his work with SPD to develop automated redaction software to increase the availability of video recorded by police. Clemans began working with the department after filing numerous public records requests for police data and records. This led SPD to hold its first-ever Hackathon find solutions to records issues highlighted by Clemans. He joined the department in May, and has helped create a Youtube channel to showcase videos recorded during SPD’s bodycam pilot, developed crime monitoring software for department analysts, and made significant strides in the development of automated redaction software.
Clemans is now part of an exclusive, but ever-growing club of WACOG Key Award winners at SPD, which includes Chief Operating Officer Mike Wagers and SPD Public Affairs Deputy Director Jonah Spangenthal-Lee.
