Man Arrested Following Attempted U-District Robbery

Officers arrested a 63-year-old man after an armed robbery at a University District grocery store was interrupted by a customer Saturday afternoon.

The suspect entered the store in the 4700 block of Brooklyn Ave. NE  at 3 PM and approached a clerk and requested change.  The clerk opened the register and began to pull out the desired change when the suspect pulled out a knife and demanded all the money from the register.  A 26-year-old man, seeing what was happening, approached the suspect from behind and tackled him to the ground.  The suspect stabbed the would-be guardian and ran for the door.  Two more people intervened and the three held the suspect on the ground.

North precinct bike officers, who happened to be riding by the store, found the pile of people on the sidewalk and the victim bleeding from a wound to his stomach.  Officers arrested the suspect and called medics for the victim.

Medics took the victim to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of his wounds.  Officers booked the suspect into King County Jail for investigation of robbery
