Woman Arrested After Stolen Car Crashes on Capitol Hill

The driver of a stolen car smashed into two vehicles Thursday night on Capitol Hill before fleeing from officers on foot, leaving his passenger behind.

Officers were patrolling near the 1700 block of Belmont Ave around 10:30 PM when they spotted a stolen Nissan Sentra. When officers pulled behind the vehicle, the Sentra’s driver pulled around a corner at E. Howell Street and Belmont Avenue and crashed into an oncoming vehicle and parked car.

As police approached the suspect’s car–which had become stuck following the crash–officers noticed the driver was still revving the Nissan’s engine and appeared to be trying to get the car into reverse.

When one officer approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, the male driver and female passenger jumped out of the car and ran. The passenger tripped and fell, and police quickly took her into custody.

Officers and a K9 team searched for the driver, but weren’t able to find him.

Police found multiple identification and credit cards inside the stolen Nissan and what appeared to be a firearm. Officers impounded the vehicle for auto theft detectives, who will continue the investigation

Officers booked the 25-year-old woman into the King County Jail for obstruction and resisting arrest. She declined to provide police with information about the driver, but officers believe they may have identified the man and are working to locate him.

One officer sustained cuts on his hand from broken glass during the incident and received stitches at a nearby hospital.
