Seattle Police are investigating a carjacking and collision that ended in the tunnel on eastbound I-90. The suspect is in custody.
At approximately 4:10 am, a family was loading their vehicle in the 500 block of Lakeside Avenue South. A suspect approached the family, implied that he had a gun, and stole the family’s car. 911 was called and officers began searching for the stolen car.
A South Precinct officer observed the stolen car travelling at a high rate of speed get onto I-90 travelling eastbound. A short time later the suspect’s vehicle was involved in a collision inside the tunnel on I-90 on Mercer Island. The suspect was taken into custody.
The Washington State Patrol is assisting Seattle Police with this investigation. At this time, the eastbound lanes of I-90 are shut down while the investigation is being conducted inside the tunnel. WSP and SPD are working quickly to reopen the roadway.
