Detectives are currently conducting their investigation surrounding the circumstances that led to an officer-involved non-fatal shooting early this morning in the 11200 block of Fremont Avenue North.
The original call began at 9:30 pm Friday. Patrol officers were called to the block after a man fired a long gun and threatened his neighbor. When officers arrived the suspect had retreated into his residence and refused to come out.
Negotiators were called to the scene in an attempt to talk the man out. For their safety, residents in the neighboring houses were asked to leave while the situation was unfolding. SWAT officers responded to the scene.
Negotiations went on throughout the evening, but the man refused to cooperate with police. SWAT officers used several tools at their disposal to convince the man to surrender, but he refused.
At approximately 4:30 Saturday morning the 66-year-old male aimed a shotgun at the SWAT armored vehicle and fired several rounds, striking the vehicle. A SWAT officer fired his weapon at the suspect, striking him in the lower half of his body. The suspect went back into the residence and refused to come out. Approximately an hour later the suspect gave up and officers were able to take him into custody without further incident. No officers were hurt during this encounter.
Seattle Fire treated the suspect at the scene and then transported him to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. His injury is not considered life-threatening, He will be booked into the King County Jail once he is released from the hospital.
In accordance with SPD policy designed in collaboration with the Department of Justice, detectives from the Force Investigation Team (FIT) and SPD Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) responded to the scene, along with representatives from the Office of Professional Accountability, to collect evidence and review the incident.
FIT detectives will investigate the force used by the officers. CSI detectives will support the investigation by processing the scene for forensic evidence.
The officer who discharged his weapon during the incident will be placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation, in accordance with department protocol.
