Officer Use Naloxone to Save Man After Downtown Overdose

An officer revived a man after he overdosed in the bathroom of a downtown restaurant last week.

Officer Kurt Alstrin was patrolling near Westlake Park on October 18th and was approached by a person who reported a possible dead body in the bathroom of a restaurant in the 1500 block of 3rd Avenue. Alstrin went to the location and found a man who, while not deceased, was unconscious and not breathing.  Officer Alstrin administered Naloxone and within a few minutes, the 30-year-old man regained consciousness. Seattle Fire Department medics took the man to Harborview Medical Center for further evaluation.

Seattle Police have successfully used Naloxone more than 20 times since they began carrying it in mid-March 2016. This case will become part of the ongoing study conducted by the University of Washington into SPD’s use of Naloxone for a possible department-wide deployment.

As a reminder, Washington law provides immunity from criminal drug possession charges for anyone seeking medical aid for themselves or someone else experiencing an overdose.
