Impaired Driver, Suspended License, Arrested After Colliding with Several Parked Cars on 12th Avenue

A 23-year-old male was arrested early Wednesday morning and is facing a number of charges after he is released from the hospital.

Just before 2:00 am on February 21st, a patrol officer from the East Precinct observed a silver Toyota Camry travelling northbound on 12th Avenue at a high rate of speed.  The Toyota drove through a red light at East Pine Street.  The officer attempted to catch up with the speeding vehicle, but it lost control and began colliding with several parked vehicles on both sides of 12th Avenue.  The driver of the Camry eventually lost complete control of the vehicle and crashed into a parked car in the 700 block of 12th Avenue.

Officers had to physically remove the driver from the car and take him into custody.  A check of his driving status showed that his license had been suspended.  Officers applied for a search warrant and had medical staff at the hospital conduct a blood draw from the suspect.  During the procedure, the suspect  assaulted the medical staff conducting the blood draw.  The blood draw was completed and submitted to evidence for testing.

Once the suspect is medically cleared from the hospital he will be booked into jail for felony assault, resisting arrest, driving on a suspended license, and DUI.  Detectives will handle the follow up investigation.
