One Suspect Arrested Following Carjacking Overnight

One 16-year-old suspect is in custody following a carjacking that occurred just before midnight in South Seattle, and a police pursuit that ended on Capitol Hill.

Just before midnight, the female victim was sitting in her parked 1991 Toyota Camry with a friend at Othello Park.  She was approached by three unknown males.  They were all dressed in black clothing, with their faces covered.  One of the suspects demanded that she get out of the car and then struck her in the face with a handgun.  Both occupants of the car got out, and the suspects got into the car.  The car then left.

After police were contacted a description of the stolen car was broadcast to officers.  One officer saw the Camry in the 2800 block of Rainier Avenue South.  It appeared to have four black males standing around it.  As the officer drove closer, two of the suspects fled on foot while two others got into the car and took off at a high rate of speed, nearly colliding with the patrol vehicle. The officer pursued the car. The stolen vehicle continued at a high rate of speed from the South Precinct to the East Precinct, where the pursuit ended when it collided with another car at 16th Avenue and East Spring Street.

The two suspects in the stolen car fled on foot.  A K-9 team responded and tracked the driver down, taking him into custody in the 1100 block of 17th Avenue.  The other suspect was not located.

The suspect was transported to SPD Headquarters where he was interviewed by detectives. He was later booked into the Youth Services Center.   The Camry was impounded for processing.  Robbery detectives will have responsibility for the follow up investigation.
