Large Response in Front of Federal Building After Man Assaults Employee, States He Had Explosives

Police responded to an incident in front of the Federal Building on 1st Avenue Saturday morning after a man assaulted security while attempting to enter the building.  The man was arrested, but had left his car in the middle of 1st Avenue and told officers that he had explosives in the trunk.

At approximately 10:40 am, Seattle Police responded to reports that a man had assaulted security at the Federal Building while attempting to enter the building. According to witnesses, the man appeared to be highly agitated and in crisis.   During the disturbance with security, the man was pepper-sprayed and detained by security personnel.  Officers arrived and took the 58-year-0ld male into custody for assault.

During his arrest the man told officers that he had explosives in his trunk.  Officers blocked off 1st Avenue and requested bomb detectives respond to the scene.  Detectives and bomb-detection dogs responded and checked the suspect’s vehicle.  Detectives did locate commercial-grade fireworks in the vehicle. The fireworks were collected and the suspect’s vehicle was towed away and the street was reopened.

The suspect was booked into the King County Jail for assault.  This remains an active and on-going investigation.
