Just before 2:00 AM this morning, the second suspect called 911 from Tukwila. He stated that he was the registered owner of the handgun police had recovered from the scene and was involved in the shooting. Seattle Police requested that Tukwila Police respond to the location the suspect was calling from and take him into custody. The 26-year-old suspect was taken into custody by Tukwila Police and then transported to Seattle’s East Precinct, where he was interviewed by investigators. Following the interview, the suspect was booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Assault.

*This information is preliminary and subject to change*

Officers have one suspect in custody and continue to look for others in what appears to be an exchange of gunfire across MLK.

On May 19th at approximately 11:53 p.m. officers responded to 911 calls of multiple shots fired in the 2800 block of South Norman Street. A witness saw two suspects hiding in a driveway shooting eastbound across MLK Jr. Way South. Both suspects then fled westbound on foot. Additional calls of shots fired then came in to police dispatch.

Responding officers located an adult female victim with a gunshot wound to the leg. Officers found her hiding in a construction site south of MLK Jr. Way South and South Charles Street. She was uncooperative with investigating officers about the events that led up to her getting shot.

Fire department medics responded to the victim’s location and transported her to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers located an adult male suspect (one of the suspects from the driveway on S. Norman St.) near 26th Avenue South and South Dearborn Street. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Canine officers backtracked the route used by that suspect and located a handgun that is believed to be the one used by the suspect. The gun will be submitted into evidence for further forensic analysis. The second suspect that was with this suspect (shooting from the driveway) remains at large. A description for suspect #2 is unavailable at this time.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the two suspects were possibly shooting at another group of suspects that were located on the east side of MLK Jr. Way South. All of the suspects from the other group (on the east side of MLK Jr. Way South) remain at large. There is no suspect descriptions available for them at this time.

This remains an active and on-going investigation.

Officers arrested a woman after she shot at another woman inside a vehicle this morning.

At approximately 2:04 a.m. officers responded to a 911 call of a fight disturbance in the area of the Noc Noc bar located at 2nd Avenue and Pike Street. One complainant stated a gunshot was heard. Officers arrived in the area but were unable to locate any signs of shots being fired. Officers asked people in the immediate area if they had heard any shots. No one came forward. Officers were unable to locate any evidence of a crime scene in the area.

A little while later police were informed that a gunshot victim had arrived at Harborview Medical Center (HMC). Officers and Gang Unit detectives responded to HMC to investigate.

Upon further investigation it was revealed that there was a fight disturbance. The female victim was in the front seat of a car. The female suspect was in the rear seat of the same car. The suspect pulled out a pistol and discharged the gun. The bullet went through the front passenger seat. The bullet may have grazed the victim, scratching her on the buttocks. The doctors at HMC informed officers that the victim did NOT have a gunshot wound.

Upon further investigation officers recovered a pistol and a shell casing from the suspect vehicle.

The 23-year-old female suspect was a convicted felon and was subsequently booked into the King County Jail for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Gang Unit detectives continue to actively investigate.

This Sunday, as Seattle police officers start their shifts and file into roll calls at precincts around the city, they’ll be greeted with a map of their precincts. Each map will be speckled with red boxes, forecasting areas where officers might be more likely to catch a burglar breaking into a home, or a prowler rifling through someone’s car.

Those red boxes are the result of a new SPD effort to take a more data-driven, Moneyball approach to policing using a new piece of software called PredPol.

“PredPol looks at crime patterns and helps SPD put officers in the right place at the right time to prevent crime,” says Sgt. Christi Robbin, who oversees the Predictive Policing program as part of the department’s 20/20 Initiative. “The forecasts are location and time based. We’re not targeting people. This is about predictive policing and the crime itself.”

Now, officers at each of SPD’s five precincts will begin receiving those forecasts at the beginning of each shift and will spend spend at least two hours of their shifts patrolling those forecasted areas, in addition to responding to their regular workload of 911 calls.

While officers typically know the busy spots in their patrol beats, the Predictive Policing system is another tool to help officers keep better track and share information across different shifts about where crime is happening.

“As an officer, I may know a particular spot in a neighborhood has had some burglaries, but I might not intuitively know they’re regularly happening at 6pm on a Tuesday,” Sgt. Robbin says. “PredPol doesn’t replace intuition. It enhances intuition.”

Currently, the department has only tasked the Predictive Policing system—also used by police in other cities like Los Angeles and Tacoma—to forecast potential areas where property crimes like burglary, car prowling and theft might occur, but the program could be expanded to project forecasts for violent crimes as well.

While this new Predictive Policing program should be a helpful tool in SPD’s crimefighting efforts, the system is only as good as the numbers it has to crunch. That means it’s more important than ever for Seattle residents call 911 to report crimes or suspicious behavior in their neighborhoods. “The more 911 call data we have, the more accurate the program will be,” Sgt. Robbin says.

Police remain on the lookout for the suspect in a stabbing that occurred in Cal Anderson Park tonight. At approximately 8:53 p.m. officers responded to Broadway Avenue and East Pine Street to contact a male victim who had been stabbed a short time earlier (the victim walked to that location to call 911). After interviewing the victim, officers determined the stabbing actually occurred in Cal Anderson Park. The victim had gotten into a verbal altercation with a male suspect that escalated with the suspect stabbing the victim in his left arm and back. The suspect then fled the scene on foot. The victim and suspect are not believed to be known to each other.

The victim, a male in his 20′s, was treated by fire department medics at the scene and subsequently transported to Harborview Medical Center for further treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is described as a light-skinned black male in his 30′s wearing all dark clothing. Officers conducted an area search however, the suspect remains at large.

This remains an active and on-going investigation.

Officers apprehended a male suspect responsible for stabbing another man during an altercation in Cal Anderson Park this evening.

At approximately 9:50 p.m. officers responded to 911 calls of a stabbing in Cal Anderson Park located in the 1600 block of 11th Avenue. Upon arrival officers located the victim, a male in his 20′s, who had been stabbed and slashed in the stomach area. Fire department medics were called to the scene and transported the victim to Harborview Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the altercation started over the suspect’s unleashed dog that was acting aggressively toward the victim. The dog charged at the victim at least twice. The victim defended himself against the second charge by striking the dog with his foot. A physical altercation then ensued between the suspect and victim. At some point in the altercation the suspect produced a knife and stabbed and slashed the victim on the front of his torso. The suspect then fled the scene on foot.

The victim and witnesses provided officers with a suspect description. Officers searched the park on foot and located the suspect, a male in his 20′s, walking northbound through the park. Officers took the suspect into custody without further incident.

Officers recovered two knives, one of which they believe the suspect used in the stabbing. It is unknown if the suspect and victim knew each other.

The suspect was transported to the East Precinct where he was interviewed and processed. He will be booked into the King County Jail for Felony Assault.

A woman walked into the East Precinct early this morning to report an attempted sexual assault/lewd act that happened shortly after 4:00 this morning in Cal Anderson Park.

The woman stated that she was walking through the park at that hour when she heard a man yelling for assistance. The woman told officers the man was stating he had been stabbed, so she went over to help. When she reached him, he stood up and produced a knife. According to the victim, the man then put the knife in his pocket and put his arm through hers, in an “escort” fashion, and the two of them walked through the park.

At one point the suspect pushed the woman against a tree and held her there with his arm while he attempted to masturbate. According to the victim, the suspect got frustrated and pushed her to the ground. At about that time, two men walking their dog came through the park. The dog ran over to the suspect and victim. The victim told officers that the suspect told the dog to leave, and the dog walkers came over to apolgize and retrieve their dog. At that point the woman got up off the ground and walked away with the dog walkers. She then walked to the precinct where she reported the incident to officers.

Officers returned to the park to search for the suspect and any potential evidence/witnesses. During their search, officers encountered a group of men in the park, one of which matched some of the descriptions of the suspect. The victim stated that the person was not the suspect. However, during the pat down search of the potential suspect, officers located a concealed sword, meat cleaver, and black Airsoft revolver. That adult suspect was arrested and booked into the King County Jail for weapons violation. Again, the person arrested in the park early this morning was not the suspect described by the victim.

The victim described the suspect as a white male, in his 30′s, approximately 6 feet tall, thin build, with bad acne on his face, bad teeth, short black hair. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and armed with a knife.

Officers conducted an area search but did not locate the suspect.
