Two suspects attacked and robbed a man in West Seattle with a baseball bat. On 5/23/13, just shortly before midnight the victim was walking in the 1600 block of SW Barton St to a friend’s house when an older model white car pulled up next to him. S1 and S2 jumped out of the car. S1 had a baseball bat and struck the victim on the lower right back area then used the bat to push the victim onto the ground.

The victim heard S2 (suspect without the bat) asking if he should “pull out” his gun as he began reaching towards his waist. The victim was not sure if S2 was asking him or S1 about pulling the gun out.

The victim did not see a gun but believed S2 had one. The suspects took the victim’s laptop bag containing a laptop and other miscellaneous items. The suspects ran back to their car and it left eastbound on SW Barton St. The victim believed there was a third suspect who was driving the car because it began to leave as soon as the other suspects had entered the vehicle. Officers responded to the area and conducted an area search with negative results. Suspect and vehicle information was circulated to patrol officers.

The victim sustained small abrasions on his hands and knees from being pushed to ground. He declined medics.

Suspect 1 is described as a black male late teen to early 20’s, dark skin, with a red bandana over face, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt.

Suspect 2- is described as black male late teen to early 20’s, dark skin, aviator sunglasses, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

Suspect 3- Unknown

Two young suspects are now in the Youth Services Center after they were caught last night attempting to steal a car in the 5400 Block of Delridge Way Southwest.

At about 11:15 pm someone called 911 to report one boy jumping the fence and opening the door to the parking garage for the other. The caller then went down to the garage and saw the boys break into a Toyota Matrix and drive the car backwards into the fence. Officers arrived quickly and contacted the two suspects in the alley behind the Delridge Library. Witnesses positively identified the two suspects as the boys who had entered the garage and vehicle, and the 14- and 15-year-old suspects were arrested. They were later booked into the Youth Services Center.

A man was shot in the parking lot of an Arby’s restaurant in the 600 block of South Michigan Street early this afternoon following an altercation.

At approximately 1:57 p.m. officers responded to reports of shots fired outside an Arby’s restaurant in the 600 block of South Michigan Street. Preliminary investigation indicates that a 27-year-old male victim got into an altercation with two male suspects in the parking lot of the Arby’s restaurant. The altercation escalated and one of the suspects shot the victim in the left arm. Both suspects then fled the scene in a 1996 Chevy Blazer. Although the victim and the suspects did not know each other, the victim’s associates (who were present) knew the suspects.

Fire department medics responded and treated the victim at the scene for his non-life-threatening injury. The victim declined to be transported by ambulance and instead chose to have his friends transport him to an area hospital for follow up treatment.

Patrol officers developed information during the course of their field investigation that led them to a residence in the 1200 block of SW Myrtle Street. Once there, officers saw that the suspect’s Blazer was parked in front of the residence. Officers surrounded the house and made telephone contact with the suspects. Both suspects subsequently surrendered to the officers and were taken into custody without further incident.

The officers recovered the gun that is believed to be the one used in the shooting. The firearm was submitted into evidence for further forensic analysis.

Both suspects were booked into the King County Jail.

Suspect #1, a 20-year-old male, was booked for Felony Assault.

Suspect #2, an 18-year-old male, was booked for (Felony) Rendering Criminal Assistance.

This remains an active and on-going investigation.

This Sunday, as Seattle police officers start their shifts and file into roll calls at precincts around the city, they’ll be greeted with a map of their precincts. Each map will be speckled with red boxes, forecasting areas where officers might be more likely to catch a burglar breaking into a home, or a prowler rifling through someone’s car.

Those red boxes are the result of a new SPD effort to take a more data-driven, Moneyball approach to policing using a new piece of software called PredPol.

“PredPol looks at crime patterns and helps SPD put officers in the right place at the right time to prevent crime,” says Sgt. Christi Robbin, who oversees the Predictive Policing program as part of the department’s 20/20 Initiative. “The forecasts are location and time based. We’re not targeting people. This is about predictive policing and the crime itself.”

Now, officers at each of SPD’s five precincts will begin receiving those forecasts at the beginning of each shift and will spend spend at least two hours of their shifts patrolling those forecasted areas, in addition to responding to their regular workload of 911 calls.

While officers typically know the busy spots in their patrol beats, the Predictive Policing system is another tool to help officers keep better track and share information across different shifts about where crime is happening.

“As an officer, I may know a particular spot in a neighborhood has had some burglaries, but I might not intuitively know they’re regularly happening at 6pm on a Tuesday,” Sgt. Robbin says. “PredPol doesn’t replace intuition. It enhances intuition.”

Currently, the department has only tasked the Predictive Policing system—also used by police in other cities like Los Angeles and Tacoma—to forecast potential areas where property crimes like burglary, car prowling and theft might occur, but the program could be expanded to project forecasts for violent crimes as well.

While this new Predictive Policing program should be a helpful tool in SPD’s crimefighting efforts, the system is only as good as the numbers it has to crunch. That means it’s more important than ever for Seattle residents call 911 to report crimes or suspicious behavior in their neighborhoods. “The more 911 call data we have, the more accurate the program will be,” Sgt. Robbin says.

Officers responded to the report of four juvenile males smoking marijuana. On 5/13/13, at approximately 12:30 p.m., officers responded 25 Av SW and SW Trenton St to investigate reports of juvenile males smoking marijuana. As officers arrived, one of the males ran away and an officer chased and caught him a few blocks away. During the search incident to arrest, four bullets were located in the suspects’ pocket.

The suspect was well known to the officers and he is known to be armed. A K-9 was called to the scene to search for the gun. The gun was located by the SPD Bomb dog Boomer.

A complainant stopped the officers and said that he saw two males who threatened him with a gun in the area and the two were associated with the suspect the officers had in custody. He gave a detailed description and direction of travel. Officers located the two males walking south on Delridge Way SW in the 9400 block. Officers stopped the two and during a show-up the complainant positively identified them.

The three suspects were transported to the Southwest Precinct. At the precinct, one of the officers discovered that the gun located by Boomer was stolen. The officer found the registered owner’s name during a check of the gun. The owner reported that the gun had been stolen in a burglary on 4/30/13. The gun’s owner responded to the precinct and identified the firearm. He also brought a copy of his victim follow up form that listed the guns’ serial number.

Suspect (1) 15-year-old suspect was released from the precinct to his father.

Suspect (2) 16- year-old male was booked into Youth Service Center for Investigation of (VUFA) Violation of the Uniform Firearms Act, Harassment and Possession of Stolen Firearm.

Suspect (3) 16-year-old male was booked into Youth Service Center for Investigation of Harassment.

Four people are seriously injured after the driver of a convertible strikes a tree and overturns his vehicle early Sunday morning.

Preliminary investigation indicates that on May 12th at approximately 3:31 a.m. a 21-year-old male driver was travelling northbound in the 2700 block of Harbor Avenue SW in his maroon 1997 Chrysler Sebring convertible. There were three adult passengers in the vehicle, two females and one male. For reasons yet to be fully determined, the driver lost control of his vehicle, struck a tree and overturned. As a result of the rollover, both female passengers were ejected from the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

Fire department medics responded to the scene and treated all four occupants of the Chrysler for injuries sustained in the collision. Medics transported three of the occupants to Harborview Medical Center (HMC) with life-threatening injuries. The fourth was transported to HMC via ambulance for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers responded to HMC to evaluate the driver of the Chrysler for indications of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Signs of impairment were detected and a blood draw was performed. The results of that blood draw are pending laboratory analysis.

Northbound lanes of travel were closed and re-routed for approximately four hours while officers and detectives conducted their on-scene investigation.

Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives responded to the scene and continue to actively investigate.

Three men are in custody after a robbery inside a building in South Park early this morning. At approximately 12:37 a.m. officers responded to the 8300 block of Dallas Avenue South for the report of a robbery-in-progress inside a building containing marijuana.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the adult male victim was inside the facility (a commercial-style building) talking on the phone when three unknown male suspects entered the building. The victim set the phone down as he was confronted by the suspects, allowing the person on the other end of the line to hear what was going on. As the suspects began binding the victim with duct tape the victim’s friend (on the phone) called 911.

As officers arrived on scene the victim was able to escape and ran out the front door of the building to the safety of officers. Two of the three suspects then exited the building and were taken into custody. Officers saw a third suspect emerge who retreated back inside the building. Officers subsequently surrounded the building and attempted to get the suspect to come out. Officers received information that led them to believe the third suspect was armed with a gun.

The SWAT team and negotiators were called to the scene. They made several attempts to get the suspect to come out and surrender peacefully. The SWAT team used distraction devices and a chemical irritant to get the suspect to come out which were unsuccessful. The front door of the building was locked, therefore a SWAT vehicle was used to breach the door in order to allow the robot to enter and survey the building. The SWAT team entered the building and located the suspect hiding in the ceiling. He was taken into custody without further incident.

All suspects are now believed to be in custody.

Fire department medics were called to the scene and treated the victim for non-life-threatening injuries he sustained during the robbery.

The victim indicated that the facility was a learning center to study marijuana production. <del>Marijuana-growing learning centers are not legal according to state law. </del>

Robbery detectives responded to the scene and are handling the active and on-going investigation.

This in from Seattle Animal Shelter- On Sunday April 21, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) removed a small dog, Zipper, from a vehicle in a West Seattle parking lot. It is alleged Zipper may have been in the car for up to six days. The SPD turned Zipper over to the Seattle Animal Shelter, where he remains, contrary to public perception that he has been returned to the caretaker who left him in the car. Zipper is happy, energetic, appears to be in good health, and is being well cared for by animal care staff. As with any similar case of potential animal cruelty, the Shelter has opened an animal cruelty investigation and will keep Zipper in custody until the investigation is complete and a course of action is determined.
