On February 17th, just after 1:00 am, Metro Transit reported having a passenger on a Metro bus at Rainier Avenue South and South Andover Street, who appeared to be injured, possibly shot. Within a minute of that call, another call came into 911 from a homeowner, stating that he had just shot an intruder at his residence in the 5200 Block of Rainier Avenue South. Multiple South Precinct officers responded to the two locations.

Officers arrived at Rainier Avenue South and South Andover and located a 37 year old male with shotgun pellet wounds to his left arm. Seattle Fire Department was summoned to treat the man’s non life-threatening injuries.

Officers arriving at the residence scene contacted the victim homeowner who told officers the following account:

Although the building appears to be a commercial business, it is, in fact, the victim’s residence. It has been converted into a private residence with the living quarters in the rear of the building. The victim stated that sometime after midnight he woke up to some banging sounds and soon realized that someone may be attempting to break in. The victim grabbed a shotgun he kept in the bedroom and walked out into the main part of the residence. The victim told officers that he saw the front door was standing open and an unknown person was standing in the entry. The victim stated that he confronted the suspect and ordered him to lie down on the floor. According to the victim, the suspect did not comply, and the victim fired his shotgun once. The suspect dropped what he was holding and ran out the front door. The victim stated that he then called 911.

Inside the entry of the residence officers located a black bag with various tools inside that the suspect had dropped. It also appeared that the suspect had first attempted to break into the residence through the back door, and then went around to the front door when that wasn’t successful.

Detectives interviewed the suspect while he was at Harborview Medical Center receiving treatment. Once he is released from the hospital, the 37 year old suspect will be booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Burglary.

The 66 year old victim was interviewed by officers at the scene. The shotgun was recovered at the scene and placed into evidence pending further investigation. The victim was not injured. Detectives will continue to handle the follow up investigation.

On February 16th shortly after 12:00 Noon a resident in the 4800 block of Columbia Drive South called 911 to report seeing two black male suspects kick in the door of a neighbor’s house and enter. The victim residence was determined to be in the 2000 block of South Edmunds Street. As officers were responding to the scene the complainant reported that the suspects had exited the house and got into a green vehicle fleeing northbound.

Numerous officers responded and began canvassing the area for the suspects. A few minutes later another complainant called 911 and reported that a green Dodge stopped in the 5300 block of Beacon Avenue South and two black males exited the vehicle and walked away. That complainant reported that the males returned to the vehicle within a few moments and fled eastbound on South Brandon Street. A short time later officers located the vehicle traveling eastbound on Dawson from MLK Way South. The suspects quickly accelerated and made several turns, eluding the officers.

Another officer then located the suspect vehicle parked in the 3900 block of South Juneau Street with one suspect walking away. Upon seeing the officer, the suspect fled on foot and the officer lost sight of him.

Items stolen from the victim’s residence were observed inside the suspect’s vehicle. The vehicle was impounded and taken to the evidence garage for processing.

A canine unit responded to the scene. The canine successfully tracked and located the suspect hiding under a house in the 3900 block of South Juneau Street.

The suspect was taken into custody and subsequently booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Burglary.

This remains an active and on-going investigation.

On February 10th, at approximately 8:00 pm, South Precinct officers and Arson Bomb Squad detectives contacted and arrested a 60 year old male in the Georgetown neighborhood for Investigation of Arson. The arrest came as a result of an investigation following an arson to an apartment building in the 6700 Block of Corson Avenue South in the early morning hours of January 23rd.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the suspect, who was the reported victim of an assault the evening before the fire, had intentionally set the fire to the building he believed the suspect lived in. The fire caused extensive damage and many residents had to flee the buring building. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Detectives developed information on the possible suspect and took him into custody on Friday evening. After being interviewed by detectives, he was later booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Arson.
