On the last day of school, most high schoolers promptly return home before sundown and begin preparing for another year of rigorous academic study. However, this year, one West Seattle teen decided to mark the end of the school year with burning instead of learning.

At about 6:30 pm, officers were driving through Schmitz Park—expecting to find the park free of teenagers, who had presumably all gone home to continue their studies instead of heading to the park to deface things and consume alcohol—when they smelled smoke.

Officers then came across a pile of charred school papers, leaves and twigs, and saw a teenage boy running away up a nearby staircase.

Officers caught up to the 15-year-old boy, arrested him and searched his backpack, which contained marijuana cigarettes, brass knuckles, baggies of marijuana hidden inside deodorant containers, several strange yellow capsules a small scale and not a single text book.

Officers called the teen’s grandmother and booked the boy into the Youth Service Center for arson, drug possession, and a weapons violation.

It’s not clear whether this incident was related to another homework arson at a West Seattle school earlier in the day:

A DV assault suspect was arrested after he was found hiding in a sofa storage compartment. This morning, just shortly after 11:00 a.m., officers responded to a DV Assault at an apartment in the 8600 block of Delridge Way SW. The investigation showed that the victim had been assaulted and had attempted to report the incident to 9-1-1.

While the victim was on the line, making the report, the suspect grabbed the phone away and threw it into the trash can. The suspect fled before officers arrived. The victim reported at that time that the suspect had at least three firearms that he kept positioned at various points throughout the apartment. Two children, ages two and three, were present during the assault. Officers took a report and left the residence.

Two hours later in the day another 9-1-1 call was received from the apartment. The operator could hear small children then the line disconnected. The dispatcher called back several times however the calls went unanswered. Officers responded back to the apartment. When the officers arrived, they could hear voices inside but no one answered the door.

Officers saw the “peephole” darken and tried the door. As the unlocked door was being opened, officers very loudly announced their intent and identification. The door was then pushed closed and locked.

Given the circumstances of the earlier call and the reported presence of firearms it was decided that the apartment would be contained and a SWAT callout would be initiated.

Shortly after the call was placed for SWAT, the female resident opened the door and came out with her children. She told officers that the suspect was not there but her demeanor said otherwise.

Officers entered the apartment to clear it and did not find the suspect. A sectional sofa in the living room, however, seemed far heavier than it should have been. Officers tipped the sofa on its back and located the suspect fully concealed within a storage bin hidden in the sofa. He was arrested without incident.

During the clearing sweep officers found three firearms in plain view. Notable was the positioning of the Sig in a bookcase in the living room. It was less than four feet from the floor and reachable by the 3 year old girl. The girl, in fact, pointed out all three locations where “Daddy” keeps his guns. All firearms were taken into police custody pending DV charges.

The suspect was booked into King County Jail for DV Assault.

Officers arrested a man after a plastic BB he fired struck a woman out for a walk with her family in West Seattle.

On Saturday, June 8th at approximately 8:02 p.m. officers responded to the area of 42nd Avenue SW and SW Graham Street for the report of a woman struck by a projectile from what was believed to be a BB gun.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a man, his wife (the victim) and their child were out for a walk in the neighborhood when they heard what they believed to be someone firing a BB gun at tin cans. Shortly thereafter the victim was struck on the buttocks by a BB. The woman’s husband believed he saw someone firing a BB-type rifle from the window of a nearby apartment complex and directed responding officers to that building.

Officers located and contacted the suspect, who was completely cooperative, at his second-floor apartment. Further investigation determined that the suspect had been shooting from his second-floor apartment window downward at some aluminum cans with an Airsoft rifle (an air rifle that fires plastic BBs). One of the plastic BB rounds ricocheted off of a can and struck the victim on the buttocks.

The victim was not injured and declined medical attention.

Officers arrested the suspect and transported him to the Southwest Precinct. Several of his Airsoft weapons and a bag of plastic BBs were placed into evidence.

The 20-year-old male suspect was subsequently booked into the King County Jail for Reckless Endangerment (a gross misdemeanor).

Detectives from the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) are investigating a rollover collision involving a stolen Lexus SUV that occurred yesterday morning in West Seattle.

Yesterday, at about 9:40 am, a beige 2002 Lexus SUV was travelling north on Harbor Avenue SW. The Lexus lost control around SW Florida Street, hitting three parked cars and rolling over. The driver of the Lexus then got out and fled on foot. The four other occupants, two females and two males, stayed with the rolled over SUV.

Seattle Fire responded and treated the passengers for their injuries. Three of the people were transported to Harborview Medical Center via ambulance for their injuries, which were later determined to be minor. The fourth person, an adult male, was evaluated at the scene by SFD, but declined further medical attention.

Officers searched for the driver who fled, but that person was not located. Officers determined that the Lexus had recently been stolen.

TCIS detectives responded to the scene and began their investigation. The roadway was closed for several hours while the investigation was conducted, but has since been reopened. This remains an active investigation.

Seattle Police Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) detectives are investigating the cause of a two car, multi-person injury collision that happened yesterday afternoon in the 1200 Block of SW Holden Street.

At about 3:52 pm on Sunday, it is believed that a Hyundai Santa Fe was travelling westbound on SW Holden. At the same time, a Dodge Caravan was travelling eastbound on SW Holden. For reasons still to be determined, while the cars were mid block, they collided head on.

Seattle Fire responded and treated the three adults and two small children that were in the Santa Fe. All the occupants were transported to Harborview Medical Center. Two of the adults suffered serious, but non life-threatening injuries. The two adults (one man and one woman) in the Dodge Caravan were also transported to Harborview, one with serious but non life-threatening injuries. The three young children in the Caravan were evaluated at the scene by Seattle Fire, but they did not have to go to the hospital.

As is routine in serious collision investigations, a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) officer responded to the hospital and evaluated both the female driver of the Caravan and the male driver of the Santa Fe for any signs of impairment. It was determined that neither driver had any signs of impairment from drugs and/or alcohol.

TCIS detectives responded to the scene and will be responsible for the follow up investigation. After several hours of road closure for the investigation, the road is back open to traffic.

Two suspects attacked and robbed a man in West Seattle with a baseball bat. On 5/23/13, just shortly before midnight the victim was walking in the 1600 block of SW Barton St to a friend’s house when an older model white car pulled up next to him. S1 and S2 jumped out of the car. S1 had a baseball bat and struck the victim on the lower right back area then used the bat to push the victim onto the ground.

The victim heard S2 (suspect without the bat) asking if he should “pull out” his gun as he began reaching towards his waist. The victim was not sure if S2 was asking him or S1 about pulling the gun out.

The victim did not see a gun but believed S2 had one. The suspects took the victim’s laptop bag containing a laptop and other miscellaneous items. The suspects ran back to their car and it left eastbound on SW Barton St. The victim believed there was a third suspect who was driving the car because it began to leave as soon as the other suspects had entered the vehicle. Officers responded to the area and conducted an area search with negative results. Suspect and vehicle information was circulated to patrol officers.

The victim sustained small abrasions on his hands and knees from being pushed to ground. He declined medics.

Suspect 1 is described as a black male late teen to early 20’s, dark skin, with a red bandana over face, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt.

Suspect 2- is described as black male late teen to early 20’s, dark skin, aviator sunglasses, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

At about 11:15 pm someone called 911 to report one boy jumping the fence and opening the door to the parking garage for the other. The caller then went down to the garage and saw the boys break into a Toyota Matrix and drive the car backwards into the fence. Officers arrived quickly and contacted the two suspects in the alley behind the Delridge Library. Witnesses positively identified the two suspects as the boys who had entered the garage and vehicle, and the 14- and 15-year-old suspects were arrested. They were later booked into the Youth Services Center.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 31-year-old male victim was walking northbound on the east side of 38th Avenue SW when he was struck on the right cheek of his face by an unknown projectile, possibly a BB (pellet). Some witnesses helped the victim walk to a nearby fire station for treatment. Medics subsequently transported the victim to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.

A man was shot in the parking lot of an Arby’s restaurant in the 600 block of South Michigan Street early this afternoon following an altercation.

At approximately 1:57 p.m. officers responded to reports of shots fired outside an Arby’s restaurant in the 600 block of South Michigan Street. Preliminary investigation indicates that a 27-year-old male victim got into an altercation with two male suspects in the parking lot of the Arby’s restaurant. The altercation escalated and one of the suspects shot the victim in the left arm. Both suspects then fled the scene in a 1996 Chevy Blazer. Although the victim and the suspects did not know each other, the victim’s associates (who were present) knew the suspects.

Fire department medics responded and treated the victim at the scene for his non-life-threatening injury. The victim declined to be transported by ambulance and instead chose to have his friends transport him to an area hospital for follow up treatment.

Patrol officers developed information during the course of their field investigation that led them to a residence in the 1200 block of SW Myrtle Street. Once there, officers saw that the suspect’s Blazer was parked in front of the residence. Officers surrounded the house and made telephone contact with the suspects. Both suspects subsequently surrendered to the officers and were taken into custody without further incident.

The officers recovered the gun that is believed to be the one used in the shooting. The firearm was submitted into evidence for further forensic analysis.

Both suspects were booked into the King County Jail.

Suspect #1, a 20-year-old male, was booked for Felony Assault.

Suspect #2, an 18-year-old male, was booked for (Felony) Rendering Criminal Assistance.

This remains an active and on-going investigation.
