Store Security Guard Assaulted And Stabbed

A loss prevention officer remains in the hospital tonight after being assaulted and stabbed by a man stealing a Seahawks sweatshirt.

On January 26th at approximately 3:45 p.m. officers responded to the 200 block of Broadway Avenue East for the report of a robbery and stabbing. Preliminary investigation indicates that the male victim, a loss prevention officer for Rite Aid, observed the suspect conceal a Seahawks sweatshirt inside his backpack. The suspect walked past all the checkout stands and made no attempt to pay for the merchandise. The victim contacted the suspect outside the store and identified himself as store security. A physical altercation immediately ensued.

The suspect produced a large serrated kitchen knife, with an estimated 10-inch long blade wrapped in a white cloth, and stabbed the victim on the top of the head and cut him on the hand, back and side.

The suspect fled the scene on foot, running east on John, then south on 11th Avenue.

Fire department medics responded to the scene and transported the victim to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

During an area search officers located the suspect hiding in a lower stairwell in the 100 block of 11th Avenue East and detained him. Witnesses positively identified the suspect and he was placed under arrest.

The suspect’s steps were re-traced and officers recovered the knife used in the attack as well as the white cloth and the Seahawks sweatshirt.

Robbery Unit detectives responded to investigate further and interview the suspect.

The 30-year-old male suspect was booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Robbery.

This remains an active and on-going investigation.
