Man Shot In U-District; Teen Arrested For Ravenna Park Gunfire

One man was wounded in a shooting near the University District late Tuesday and police later arrested arrested an 18-year-old in Ravenna Park following a second incident of gunfire.

Just after 11:30, a 29-year-old man was sitting on a motorized scooter at 7th Avenue NE and NE 45th Street when a gunman–also reportedly on a scooter or BMX motorbike–pulled up beside him and opened fire. The victim was struck in the arm by gunfire and fell to the ground as the gunman fled.

Police arrived on-scene quickly, but the victim was already gone. Witnesses reported he stood up and walked away from the scene.

Officers found the victim near the scene and called for medics, who transported him to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

A little more than an hour later, at 12:45 AM, officers received report of gunshots in Ravenna Park, near 20th Ave. NE and NE 58th Street.

As police arrived, they heard another volley of gunshots, and spotted a large group of teenagers inside the park, standing around a six-foot-high bonfire.

As officers approached the group of teens, several of them began walking away, including one 18-year-old who officers saw drop a handgun next to a garbage can.

Officers detained the teen with the gun, recovered the firearm, and arrested him for unlawful possession of a firearm and trespassing. Officers weren’t able to locate anyone with injuries at the scene.

Police haven’t found any link between the two incidents of gunfire, but are investigating both cases.
