Man assaulted downtown, suspect arrested

On April 20th, at approximately 10:47 PM, West Precinct patrol officers responded to a report of a male beating a transient male outside of a business at the corner of 3rd Avenue and Pine Street.  Upon arriving at the corner, the officer saw a male standing over a male who was lying on the ground.  The man matched the description of the suspect given in the 911 call.  The officer gave the suspect several commands to stop and speak with him, but the suspect refused, and began to run.  Several of the suspect’s friends were there as well, encouraging him to run.  The suspect ran across the street, but the officer was able to quickly catch him.   The victim, a 53 year old man, indicated that he was sleeping underneath a blanket at the time of the assault and did not see who had attacked him, however, several independent witnesses positively identified the suspect as the person who had punched and kicked the sleeping man.  The victim declined medical attention.  The suspect, a 22 year old male, was arrested for assault and obstructing and booked into the King County Jail.
