On 12/4/10, at approximately 6:00 p.m., security officers discovered an unknown subject in the men’s restroom in a closed portion of a hospital in the 100 block of 16 Ave E. He was observed to be armed with a folding knife. He refused to leave the restroom and proceeded to barricade himself inside.
He made no threats, and put the knife away on request. Upon arrival of patrol units, he communicated with them briefly but refused to identify himself or exit the restroom. SWAT and Hostage Negotiators responded to the scene. The subject refused to communicate or leave the restroom. Upon impasse, SWAT introduced pepper spray into the restroom, and made entry.
They removed the suspect without incident. He was evaluated by Seattle Fire Department and then transported to the East Precinct.
Officers discovered that the suspect had damaged several fixtures in the restroom while barricaded.
He was booked into King County Jail for Criminal Trespass and Property Destruction, with referral to Mental Health Court. Narcotics use and impairment appeared likely, from observation of the suspect’s behavior and the presence of paraphernalia.
