Woman robbed in International District, suspect arrested

On February 2nd, at approximately 6:20 PM, a West Precinct officer was driving her patrol car in the 400 Block of 7th Avenue South.  She heard a woman scream, and then saw a group of people standing in front of a restaurant at 7th Avenue South and South King, gesturing that a woman had just had her purse taken.  The victim and most of the witnesses were speaking Mandarin Chinese.  The officer did observe a man running southbound being pursued by one of the witnesses.  The officer immediately gave chase and followed the suspect into a store in midblock of the 700 Block South King Street.  The officer requested additional officers to respond to her location as she took the suspect into custody.  He was postively identified as the correct suspect.  Apparently, the 48 year old male had been bothering customers outside the restaurant just prior to this incident.  He approached the group and asked for money.  When his request was turned down, he walked around the corner.  He then returned and attempted to take the 68 year old female’s purse that was on her shoulder.  The suspect yanked on the purse strap as he attempted to pull it off her shoulder.  The victim was able to retain possession of her purse.  Failing to get the purse, the suspect then attempted to grab a plastic bag containing leftover food the victim was holding.  The victim was able to hold onto that bag as well, and the suspect fled. The victim was not injured during this encounter.  The suspect was later booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Robbery.
