On March 4th the Traffic Unit conducted two separate pedestrian crosswalk enforcement operations, one at North 41st Street and Stone Way North, and one at 1st Avenue South and South Walker Street.
From 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. officers set up at North 41st Street and Stone Way North. In that hour and fifteen minutes officers wrote 33 crosswalk violation tickets, one no driver’s license ticket, one cell phone violation ticket and two no proof of insurance tickets.
The officers received the verbal support from residents and local business employees, which they have experienced before when working this location.
From 12:22 p.m. to 1:22 p.m. officers set up at 1st Ave South and South Walker Street, which is a legal pedestrian crossing without the painted crosswalk markings. At this location there are cut outs in a raised island in the center of the road and disabled person ramps cut into the curbs on both sides. The intersection has street signs and stop signs for cross traffic.
The Traffic Unit has received several complaints about vehicular traffic not stopping for pedestrians at this location. The start time fell within the local business lunch hour so there were a large number of citizen crossings and a large number of violations when these people were in the crosswalk.
In the one hour officers were on location they wrote 37 crosswalk violation tickets.
