Shots fired; one suspect at large, one in custody UPDATED

On 6/28/11, just shortly before midnight, an officer was in a parking lot monitoring two groups of people, who had just left a nearby lounge at 7th and S. Lane St.  The groups were meandering about in the middle of the street on 7th Ave between Dearborn and S. Lane St, when the officer observed the groups arguing back and forth.

One of the suspects displayed a handgun and began firing at the second suspect. The officer identified herself and gave verbal commands to this first suspect, but he continued to fire at the second suspect.  The officer fired at the first suspect, but did not strike him.  The second suspect then began returning fire at the first suspect.  The officer again identified herself and gave verbal commands to the second suspect, but he continued to fire. The officer then fired at the second suspect, but did not strike him.  She then advanced on the second suspect and placed him in custody.  The first suspect managed to escape capture.  However, two handguns were recovered near the scene.

CSI, Homicide, Gang Unit detectives and K-9 responded to the scene. At this point it is unknown what precipitated the argument and subsequent shooting. Detectives transported a host of witnesses to Police Headquarters (HQ) for questioning. The adult male suspect was also transported to HQ where he will be interviewed and subsequently booked into King County Jail.

The first suspect was described as a black male, 6’0 feet tall, wearing a dark top.

This is an open and active investigation and no additional details are available.
