17-yr-old shoots himself in thigh

On October11, 2011 at approximately 7:43 a.m., a woman called 911 to report that her son had been shot and that he was waiting at Rainier Avenue South and South Orcas Street.  Officers arrived and contacted the 17-year-old victim and his friend. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center via Seattle Fire Medics with a non-life threatening gun shot wound to the thigh.

The victim told officers that he and his friend were waiting at a bus stop at Rainier Avenue South and South Holly Street when they heard a “popping” noise. The two then boarded the bus. Once the bus reached Rainier and South Graham Street the victim stated he’d been shot. The victim called his mother and he and his friend exited the bus. The two continued to walk northbound on Rainier until they reached South Orcas Street. The victim told officers that he had no idea what had happen or who shot him.

During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the 17-year-old victim had actually shot himself while aboard the bus. Officers conducted a thorough search of the area and located the gun.  The incident was documented and the 17-year-old may face charges for unlawful possession of a fiream.
