Officers catch an 18-year-old man after a foot chase who assaulted and robbed a woman of her cell phone today.
At approximately 3:28 p.m. the adult female victim was using her cell phone at 20th Avenue and East Madison Street when an unknown male suspect grabbed her in a choke hold and forcibly removed the phone from her hand. As the suspect fled the scene on foot the victim was able to use the cell phone of a man changing his tire to call 911 and provide a suspect description and direction of travel.
A responding officer located the suspect and tried to detain him but he took off running. The officer pursued the suspect on foot while additional officers converged on the chase location. Shortly thereafter the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
The victim positively identified the suspect and he was placed under arrest. Officers recovered the victim’s cell phone (which was in the suspect’s possession as well as another possibly stolen iphone).
The 18-year-old male suspect was transported to the Robbery Office and turned over to detectives to be interviewed further. He was still being interviewed at the time of this report.
This remains an active and on-going robbery investigation.
