Victim Saved from Serious Injury by Glasses in Last Night’s Drive By Shooting

A 16-year-old girl was spared serious, possibly fatal injuries after the glasses she was wearing deflected a bullet that struck her  in the face  during a drive by shooting last night at 54th Avenue South and South Roxbury Street.

At around 9:40 pm,  there were several people, including children, inside the residence.  The victim was lying on the couch in the living room.  An unknown group of individuals, possibly in a dark colored sedan, drove by the house and began shooting at it.  Several of the shots went through the walls and one round went through the front window.  The victim was struck by a single round in the bridge of her glasses, breaking them.  Amazingly, she was not seriously injured.  The other occupants in the house called 911 as the car returned  and fired into the house a second time.

Patrol officers arrived quickly and located the victim.  She was alert and speaking with officers.  She was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  Officers located spent shell casings in the street and collected them for evidence. Officers searched for the suspect vehicle, but it was not located. Detectives from the Gang Unit responded to take over the investigation.  Investigators believe the residence was targeted, but that the 16-year-0ld girl was not the intended victim.  Gang detectives will continue to follow up on this shooting incident.
