Last fall we committed to completely deactivating every node in our wireless mesh network. And we did. Kind of.
It turns out we didn’t get all of them. A node that was previously inactive (lack of electricity can have that effect) powered on when one of our city partners restored power to the pole. The rogue node, while producing a visible signal, was not being operated.
@sleepylemur of the Seattle Privacy Coalition alerted us to this via Twitter earlier today. Technicians quickly responded and manually deactivated the node.
This network will remain inactive in accordance with city ordinance until such time that we have a policy that has been developed in partnership with privacy advocates and duly approved by the City Council.
