(Updated) Burglar Steals Auction Items From SIDS Nonprofit Days Before Fundraiser

A North Seattle nonprofit working to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is working with SPD detectives after a burglar made off with items scheduled to be auctioned at a fundraiser this weekend.

Surveillance cameras captured a lone burglar slipping inside the offices of the Northwest Infant Survival & SIDS Alliance in the 4600 block of Sunnyside Avenue at 12:40 AM Wednesday. The man then made off with a laptop, digital camera-binocular combo, and Seahawks gear previously donated to the nonprofit.

“These were for our annual auction,” says Northwest Infant Survival & SIDS Alliance Executive Director Krista Cossalter Sandberg. “It’s our biggest fundraising event of the year.” The burglar also stole the computer speakers right off of Sandburg’s desk and 20 thumb drives containing informational packets for bereaved families affected by SIDS, but left behind a football signed by Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. Police believe the same suspect also broke into another office in the building shared with the SIDS Alliance, where he ate food, drank beer and defecated in a trash can before staying the rest of the night in the building.

North Precinct burglary detectives are actively investigating the case and reviewing surveillance video from the scene.

UPDATE:

Detectives have recovered surveillance video showing the suspect just before the burglary. If you recognize him, please contact the North Precinct Burglary Unit at 206 684-5735 or call 911.
