Police arrested a man Friday night in Rainier Beach after his casual disregard of traffic and bicycle helmet laws led officers to discover he was also in violation of state laws prohibiting felons from carrying guns.
Officer John Hahn was about to pull through a green traffic light Rainier and Henderson around 6 PM Friday when a helmet-less 64-year-old man on a bicycle rolled across the street in front of him.
When Officer Hahn stopped to the speak with the man about his lack of helmet, he volunteered that he had a warrant out for driving with a suspended license.Minutes later, as officers checked on his warrant and discovered the man was also a convicted felon, he volunteered that he was carrying a gun in his waistband, in violation of state laws prohibiting felons from possessing firearms.
Police took the man into custody, recovered the handgun and found a razor blade inside his pocket.
Officers took the man to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of a pre-existing medical issue and plan to book him into the King County Jail for unlawful possession of a firearm upon his release from the hospital.
