Officers responded to a report of a bank robbery in the 2800 block of 3 Avenue Monday afternoon and quickly apprehended the suspect as he tried to walk out of the area.
Dispatch began receiving reports at 3:50 p.m of a bank robbery where the suspect had demanded cash while claiming he had a bomb. Tellers reportedly handed over some cash and the man walked out only to be taken into custody at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Bell Street. Officers securing the 48-year-old man noticed large pipe inside of a bag the man had been carrying just prior to his arrest. Officers, believing the pipe may be a bomb, immediately cleared the area of pedestrian and vehicle traffic and requested the bomb squad respond.
Detectives from the Arson/Bomb squad arrived and removed the device from the bag, taking it to the a location to be disposed of safely.
Officers booked the suspect into King County Jail for investigation of robbery.
