Police arrested an 18-year-old student at Franklin High School on Friday after staff contacted him about potentially having drugs on campus and found a loaded handgun in his backpack.
School staff called the teen to the principal’s office around 9 AM after noticing he smelled of marijuana. The student cooperated with school employees and disclosed there was a firearm in his bag. Staff then found a loaded, stolen handgun in the student’s bag and contacted police.
In addition to the firearm, police also seized a credit card found in the student’s bag, which was in someone else’s name. The student was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of stolen property and unlawful possession of a firearm.
At this point in the investigation, police have found no indications of any threat of violence at the school.
SPD continues to work closely with school officials on the investigation and ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of students.
