Driver Arrested, Detectives Investigating Following Multiple-Vehicle Collision Downtown,

A 32-year-old driver was arrested Sunday after he seriously injured his passenger in a multiple-vehicle collision at 6th Avenue and Columbia Street and showed signs of impairment at the scene.

On Sunday, October 7th at approximately 5:20 pm, the 32-year-old driver of a Kia Optima was travelling southbound on Interstate 5.  The driver took the James Street exit from the freeway.  As the driver approached 6th Avenue and Marion Street, he struck one vehicle and caused a chain reaction collision that involved four additional vehicles.  The 28-year-old female passenger in the Kia sustained a critical head injury.  No other occupants of any other vehicle were injured.  The 32-year-old man exhibited signs of impairment, so a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) officer responded to the scene and evaluated the driver.  The suspect was determined to be impaired and was later booked into the King County Jail for investigation of vehicular assault.

Detectives from the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) responded to the scene and began their investigation.  The road was closed for an extended period of time while the investigation continued and the vehicles were towed away from the scene.  The road was re-opened to traffic shortly after 10:00 pm.

This remains an active and on-going TCIS investigation.
