Detectives are conducting an investigation following a fatal vehicle/pedestrian collision that occurred Thursday night on Rainier Avenue South.
At approximately 9:15 pm, witnesses reported seeing an adult male in a wheelchair enter the crosswalk on the north side of Rainier Avenue South at Martin Luther King Jr. Way South against the red “Don’t Walk” pedestrian signal.
A van, driven by a 61-year-old male, travelling northbound on Rainier, struck the victim and the wheelchair. Seattle Fire responded and transported the 51-year-old male to Harborview Medical Center. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the van remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. He was evaluated by officers but exhibited no signs of impairment. Traffic Collision Investigation detectives responded to the scene and began their investigation.
This remains an active and on-going investigation.
