On 04-02-2021 at 1844 hours, officers responded to a large encampment fire under I-5 which billowed smoke visible from all over Seattle. During the call, WSP and Seattle Fire were brought in and units ended up shutting down I-5 for a short period of time until SFD could get the fire under control. The fire burned up several tent structures between two pillars supporting the I-5 southbound exit to Airport Way and almost reached the bottom of the bridge deck. Prior to SFD arrival, three occupants had to be removed from their tents and reluctantly left. Multiple explosions could be heard in the fire as well as what appeared to be ammunition cooking off. No injuries occurred as a result of the fire. WSDOT arrived and verified the bridge was structurally sound and safe to re-open.
