Threats Suspect Taken into Custody After Hourslong Standoff

After hours of negotiation, Seattle Police Department (SPD) SWAT officers took a 36-year-old male into custody for felony harassment and property damage Downtown Monday morning.

Shortly after 10:00 a.m., officers responded to the 1500 block of 3rd Avenue for a 911 call of a man who was flooding his apartment and causing significant damage to the building. When officers arrived and interviewed building staff, they learned the suspect threatened to shoot anyone who entered the apartment. Officers were told the suspect had been seen with a handgun in the past.

The water to the building was shut off and officers attempted to contact the suspect, but he barricaded himself in the apartment. After hours of unsuccessful negotiations, a warrant was approved, and SWAT made entry to the apartment.

Initially, the male tied a rope to his waist and stood on the 5th floor ledge of the building, but after another round of negotiations, the suspect came down from the ledge and was taken into custody.

Several magazines, live ammunition, and a gun safe were found in the apartment.

The suspect was booked into King County Jail for investigation of felony harassment and property damage.
