As everyone gets ready to celebrate the Fourth of July, it’s a great time to remember that the personal use of fireworks is illegal in Seattle.
But don’t fret! You can have a great time enjoying the fireworks show at Lake Union during the Seafair 4th of July celebration. The event is free and open to everyone. It will also be broadcast on KONG-TV.
Many residents and visitors will gather at some of our beautiful parks and beaches around our city, such as Gas Works Park, Alki Beach, Golden Gardens Park, and Lakeview. You can count on Seattle police officers and firefighters to be out and about serving our community throughout the celebrations. Got any questions? Just ask!
Help everyone stay safe and ease the strain on our first responders throughout the day by following these safety tips:
- Call 911 to report crimes and for any medical or safety emergencies
- Don’t drink alcohol and drive, and don’t consume illegal drugs
- If operating a boat or other watercraft, don’t drink or use drugs
- Try to use public transportation and rideshare services to ease traffic flow and reduce congestion
- Unused fireworks can be disposed of at every SPD police precinct
Our partners at the Seattle Fire Department have also shared some tips about how to reduce fires caused by fireworks near your home:
- Remove branches, dry grass and anything that can burn from around your home
- Make sure tree branches are not touching your home
- Clear roof and gutters of pine needles and leaves
- Don’t leave cardboard or loose paper recyclables outside – make sure they are in a closed bin
- Keep a garden hose with nozzle hooked up and ready to use

Have fun, be safe, and Happy Independence Day, Seattle!
