Impaired Driver Arrested After Attempting to Flee Police in Phinney Ridge

A 31-year-old man was arrest after fleeing from police in Phinney Ridge neighborhood.

On Wednesday, October 15, at 12:17 a.m., an officer was flagged down by a passerby in the 5500 block of Phinney Avenue North. The passerby reported a silver sedan parked in the roadway with an unconscious driver behind the wheel.

Police arrived in the 300 block of North 53rd Street and found a gray Ford stopped partially in the middle of the street. The car was running, and the driver appeared unconscious in the driver’s seat. Inside the vehicle, officers observed drug paraphernalia including a pipe, hypodermic needle, and a spoon with white residue. The ignition appeared damaged with pliers lodged in it, signs that the vehicle may have been stolen.

Additional officers responded to assist with a high-risk vehicle stop. Officers used a loudspeaker, activated emergency lights and sirens, and made multiple announcements to wake the driver, but the driver did not respond.

A patrol vehicle was positioned behind the car to prevent movement. After contact was made, the driver woke up and attempted to flee by accelerating into a second patrol vehicle positioned in front. The vehicle was blocked from moving forward, and the man exited and ran from the scene.

The suspect was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit.

During the arrest officers recovered fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine. The suspect later admitted to using methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Officers attempted to contact the registered owner of the vehicle but were unable to confirm the vehicle was stolen.

The suspect was arrested and booked into King County Jail for investigation of attempting to elude a police vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, malicious mischief, and obstructing a public officer. Officers also recommended charges for DUI.

This continues to be an ongoing investigation.
