Seattle police officers arrested two 17-year-old boys Sunday evening after they eluded officers and crashed a stolen car in the Greenlake neighborhood.
On Oct 12, at about 9:50 p.m., Community Response Group (CRG) officers, working with the Renton Police Department, were searching for a stolen car taken during an armed robbery earlier that day.
CRG officers spotted the car in the 900 block of North 98th Street and initiated a high-risk traffic stop. The driver immediately fled from officers, initiating a vehicle pursuit. The driver fled southbound on Aurora Avenue North, driving recklessly, running multiple red lights.
Moments later, the driver lost control of the car, and it crashed into an SUV and then into a fence in the Greenlake neighborhood. CRG arrested the driver from the vehicle, yet two male occupants exited the car and ran away on foot in different directions.
CRG chased after the suspects, arresting one of them nearby.
The third suspect got away. Surrounding the area, police set up a security perimeter and searched for him using a K9 team, yet he evaded capture and remains outstanding.
CRG could see weapons that the teens left inside the wrecked out car. They towed the car to SPD’s Vehicle Processing Room pending a search warrant.
Police booked the two suspects into juvenile detention for multiple charges including Eluding a Police Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
One of the suspects, already a convicted felon is prohibited from carrying guns, the other suspect, under 21 pending adjudication, is also prohibited from having firearms.
On Oct. 15, CRG officers served the warrant on the car and recovered multiple firearms including an extended round magazine and a drum magazine.
The General Investigations Unit detective assigned to this case referred criminal charges to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Investigation into the initial carjacking will be led by the Renton Police Department.
