Police Rescue Woman from Burning Apartment in Capitol Hill

Seattle police pulled a woman out of a burning apartment in the Capitol Hill neighborhood Sunday evening, November 2.

At about 5:30 p.m., officers responded to a welfare check at an apartment building in the 500 block of 14th Avenue East. When officers reached the ninth floor, they heard a fire alarm coming from one of the units.

Officers received no response and learned from a neighbor the alarm had been sounding for about 30 minutes. Believing the resident could be in danger, officers forced their way inside.

The apartment was filled with smoke; a fire burned on the stovetop. Officers found located a 47-year-old woman inside the apartment and pulled her to safety. The woman appeared confused and disoriented.

The Seattle Fire Department arrived, gained control of the fire, and recommended a brief evacuation of the upper floors due to heavy smoke. Firefighters later determined the building was safe, and residents returned to their units.

Medics transported the woman to Harborview Medical Center for further evaluation. No injuries were reported. The incident caused temporary disruption to the building and neighborhood because of the large emergency response.
