Detectives Arrest Teen for Ballard Bridge Graffiti, Attacking 80 Year Old

Seattle police detectives have arrested a 17-year-old boy for attacking an 80-year-old man who confronted him while the teen was scrawling graffiti onto the side of the Ballard Bridge earlier this week.

The victim was driving on Nov. 17 when he saw four suspects spray painting graffiti on a nearby auto business in the 4900 block of 15th Avenue Northwest.

The man pulled over to confront the suspects and take cell phone video. While the man recorded, two of the teens crossed the street and began tagging the side of the bridge.

During the interaction with the 80-year-old man, one of the suspects punched him multiple times, injuring his shoulder and cutting his lip. When another bystander intervened, the suspect and his teen accomplice ran away.

The victim and his family posted video online showing the assault and the spray painting. The family did this to seek community assistance identifying the suspects. Through Nextdoor, a social media app, someone identified the suspects by name.

Detectives in SPD’s Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) were assigned the case and quickly identified the teen suspects. The 17-year-old who assaulted the victim has previous interactions with law enforcement.

When reaching out to the nearby business, detectives found that the business had already covered up the graffiti. Their assessed damage was $250.

While investigating, detectives recovered five discarded spray paint cans at the scene. They collected the evidence for fingerprint processing.

On Nov. 20, CIU detectives responded to a high school in Wallingford looking for the 17 year old. With the assistance of school administrators, they arrested him without incident for investigation of property destruction and assault.

Police took the suspect to the North Precinct for processing, notifying his mother.

Detectives contacted staff at the Judge Patricia H. Clark Children and Family Justice Center for potential booking, but they declined to take him. Police released the teen to the custody of his parent.

The City of Seattle has since repaired the bridge. The estimated cost of repairing the graffiti damage to the bridge was $1,110.

This continues to be an open and active investigation.
