Community Celebrates 29th Annual Lunar New Year in Chinatown-International District

The Seattle Chinatown-International District (CID) came alive Saturday, March 7th for its 29th annual Lunar New Year celebration, featuring vibrant dragon and lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, and powerful drumming that energized the streets. More than 50 food vendors lined the streets, serving everything from Korean fried chicken to Vietnamese Bánh Mì sandwiches. The program kicked off at Hing Hay Park, where CID BIA Executive Director Tuyen Than welcomed attendees and recognized the Year of the Horse, symbolizing proactivity and persistence.

Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes also addressed the crowd, sharing enthusiasm for joining the celebration, experiencing the food, and connecting with community members, while noting that the year’s theme aligns with SPD’s commitment to public safety.

Following the kickoff, Chief Barnes walked the neighborhood, visiting food vendors and local businesses such as Sharetea where co-owner Nicole Kim took his order, and highlighting the important roll small business play in strengthening Seattle’s communities.
