Seattle Police Department detectives with the Gun Violence Reduction Unit (GVRU) are investigating a shooting at 5:30 pm today in the Yesler Terrace neighborhood where the Mayor was attending a community event.
Police received a report of multiple people shooting near the Yesler Terrace Community Center. The shooting damaged the building, but no injuries were reported. At the time of the shooting, the Mayor was attending an event with multiple children and adults. Witnesses stated that the suspects left the area in an unidentified vehicle.
“This shooting reminds us that violence has no place in our community. Our neighbors have the right to gather, speak, and celebrate without fear of violence,” said Chief Shon Barnes. “Addressing gun violence requires us to take a whole-of- Seattle approach that includes the criminal justice system. We must work together to do more to protect each other.”
Detectives with the GVRU and Crime Scene Investigations are on scene, collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses. Detectives are working on developing any possible suspect or vehicle descriptions.
