Suspect in Custody, Child Safe Following Early Morning South Seattle Standoff

A 2-year-old child is safe and a 28-year-old man is now in custody following a brief standoff early this morning in South Seattle.

At about 6:00 this morning, officers responded to an apartment complex in the 5900 Block of 37th Avenue South for a disturbance call.  When officers arrived, they were met by an adult female standing outside who told them she had been sexually assaulted by the suspect still inside the apartment.  She also said the suspect was inside the apartment with a 2-year-old child.  Officers called for medical aid for the victim and she was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.

The suspect refused to come out of the apartment.  Officers were speaking with him and  negotiators and SWAT officers were called to the scene to assist in a resolution while a search warrant was obtained.

After a couple of hours, the negotiators were able to convince the man to surrender and he was taken into custody without incident.  The child was unharmed.  The suspect will be booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Rape.

Detectives from the Sexual Assault Unit responded and will handle the follow up investigation.
