East Precinct officers open up their hearts and wallets for area children

In the last few years, Toys for Tots has had an increasingly difficult time meeting the demand for toys, and in many cases, they were simply unable to supply toys to everyone that requested them.  Yesler Community Center did not receive any toys the last two years from Toys for Tots.

For many of Yesler’s children, this would have been the only holiday gift they would have received.  “This year is the first time that not only did SPD take an active role in planning for this event, this is also the first time that SPD has collected toys to be distributed to the children of the community during the holiday party” , said Judi Carter Senior Property Manager of the low-income family housing.  I think it’s just wonderful that SPD has supported us by donating so many toys to the kids here.”  She added, “Thankfully, the SPD was able to step up and fill the need this year, and at the last minute too.  They rescued our children.”

Judi Carter and Yesler Community Center Recreation Coordinator, Thavy Pen, are both expecting approximately 100 children and their families to attend the holiday party this year, which will also feature arts and crafts, food and drink, cookie decorating, games, and photos with Santa.  The Yesler Community Center Holiday Celebration is open to the public, which includes all children who regularly attend activities at the community center.  The majority of those children who utilize the community center actually live at Yesler Terrace.  This event is scheduled for Friday, Dec 10 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

There were other key players that stepped up and made this event possible; Linda Spromberg SPD Communications, East Precinct Commander James Dermody, Parking Enforcement Officer Nanette Toyoshima,  Alex Worden and the SPD Photo Lab, Seattle City Attorney Peter Holmes and the City Attorney’s Office.

Last but certainly not least, a special thank you to Officer John Skommesa, East Precinct Community Police Team Officer assigned to Yesler Terrace.
