On May 5th, at approximately 5:15 PM, East Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of shots fired near 24th Avenue and East Cherry Street. Officers arrived and contacted the intended victim at 24th Avenue and East Marion Street. The victim was a 30 year old woman who had been driving her car out of the parking lot of a nearby grocery store in the 2200 Block of East Madison Street. The victim told officers that as she was exiting the parking lot, a white car had stopped facing southbound in the middle of 22nd Avenue, blocking the victim from exiting. The victim, not knowing why the car had stopped, honked her horn once in an attempt to get the other car to move. The driver of the white car, desribed as a black female in her early 20’s, got out of her car and began yelling at the victim. The victim then maneuvered her car around the blocking car and left southbound on 22nd Avenue. The suspect car then began closely following the victim down 22nd at a high rate of speed. The victim attempted several turns in an attempt to get away from the suspect car. While driving southbound, in approximately the 900 Block of 24th Avenue, a passenger who was in the suspect car leaned out of the rear, driver’s side window and fired 1 or 2 shots from a handgun at the victim’s vehicle. The shooter suspect was later described as a black male in his late teens or early 20’s with braids. It is believed that the victim’s vehicle was struck once in the rear, because of a dent on the rear top corner passenger side of the car. The victim continued to 24th and East Cherry at which point the suspect vehicle stopped following. The victim then was able to call 911 and report the incident. The victim was not injured during this incident. There were several different descriptions of the suspect vehicle provided to officers by witnesses, anything from a white BMW, a “Cadillac type” vehicle, or a Monte Carlo. Officers and Gang Unit detectives investigated this incident. Detectives will continue to follow up on this case.
