13-yr-old boy shot in ankle

On 8/4/11, at approximately 1008 p.m., officers responded to the 4400 block of S. Willow St, to investigate several calls of shots being fired in the area.  There were not exact locations of the shots as people from several blocks were calling in.

Officers located a 13-yr-old male who had a gunshot wound to the left ankle.  The shot hit the left ankle and exited the heel.  Seattle Fire Dept responded and the juvenile was transported to Harborview Medical Center (HMC) with non-life threatening injuries.

The area was checked and no evidence was located.  Officers were told by the victim and his friends that there was a disturbance between two groups of Asians when one male pulled out a ‘police’ style baton and another male pulled out a handgun.  The two groups then split up.  A short time later the victim and his friends were by the playfield when a vehicle, described as small, dirty, and boxy pulled around the corner and the passenger, an Asian male leaned out and fired several shots and then fled.

While officers were investigating the shooting, other officers were dispatched to Rainier and Graham regarding another assault.  The officers contacted an Asian male who stated that he was walking down the street, “unknown” location and was struck in the head by an “unknown” male with a baton.  This victim could/would not give any description or the location where this assault happened.  He was also transported to HMC with non-life threatening injuries.

While at HMC, the 13-yr-old shooting victim saw the second victim (male who was assaulted with baton) and informed officers that this male was one of the people involved in the earlier disturbance between the two groups of Asian males.

The assault victim was contacted again by officers and still would not provide information about the incident.   Gang Unit Detectives responded to HMC to interview the second victim.  Officers believe the two incidents are related.  Officers believed that the 13-yr-old victim was not the intended target of the shooting.

This is an active and on-going investigation.
