Woman drives into Lake Washington

On November 2nd at approximately 4:26 p.m. an elderly female was driving her red VW Beetle northbound on 50th Avenue South approaching Lake Washington Boulevard South.  Preliminary investigation indicates that she mistakenly depressed the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal as she approached a stop sign.  Her vehicle accelerated through the intersection and ended up approximately 30 yards out into Lake Washington.

There were several witnesses to the collision, one of whom was a 39-year-old woman who subsequently swam out into the cold water of Lake Washington to assist the driver out of her vehicle.  The driver was taken aboard a boat that was nearby and then taken to shore.  The driver sustained no injuries.  She was evaluated by SFD personnel at the scene and released.
